The Rule Of 100

I have been giving up too quickly

If you’re anything like me, you have probably tried lots of different things and gave up after not seeing any result quickly because hey this doesn’t work. Guilty!

I recently re-read ‘Atomic Habits’ in which an experiment is mentioned from Jerry Uelsmann, a professor at the University of Florida.

On the first day of his class he divided his photography students into two groups.

Group A had to submit hundred photos for an A grade, ninety photos for a B, and so on.

Group B was only rated based on the excellence of their work. They would only need to produce one photo during the semester, but to get an A, it had to be a nearly perfect image.

After the semester was over, the professor compared results.

I thought that putting a lot of work into that one perfect image would produce the best outcome but the opposite was true.

He found that group A had consistently made better photos than group B because they were constantly experimenting with composition, lighting, storytelling, and simply working on their craft and honing their skills.

Meanwhile group B sat around speculating about perfection.

Moral of the story is that consistently doing will make you better and is more important than waiting for the stars to align.

Many refer, directly and indirectly, to this experiment because it can be applied to any form of success you see.

Athletes become great not because of talent but by consistently showing up for practice every single time.

Content creators become ‘overnight successes’ because they produce hundreds even thousands of pieces of content with small iterations to finally strike gold.

That’s why I thought this subject would be relevant for my second newsletter (the first one was more an introduction).

I have thinking lots about starting a newsletter - I can only truly understand if this is something for me when I start doing it. And not just one newsletter.

Worst case I have learned about writing and tried something I wanted to do for a long time.

Best case, you like it and I have my first subscriber! Plus I have learned about writing and tried something I wanted to do for a long time.

Can’t lose.
